Care Packets for the Homeless

There was a sense of joy in the church as everyone’s hands were staying busy. The little children stood in line with open bags and wide smiles, as the older students quickly filled the emptiness.

On March 1st, St Gregorios Orthodox Church Sunday School and MGOCSM in Austin, Texas packaged 144 care packages for the homeless. Each pack contained various food and hygiene items.

The project was administered in partnership with Caritas of Austin, a nonprofit organization that provides financial and emotional support for numerous people in poverty within Travis County. Their community development coordinator, Grace Alrutz, worked hand in hand with the church to provide information and support behind the project.

St. Thomas Mission Attappady - The Tribal Mission

The Malankara Orthodox Church was never afraid in walking into unchartered territory and go into places that many had neglected. The tribal area of Attappady is one among them.
H.H. Moran Mar Baselius Didymus I had the inner calling to be the blessing for the tribals of Attappady. H.H, a man of prayer and service served the backback diocese of Malabar for 4 decades. In 1994, H.H. sowed the seeds of the first Tribal mission in Kerala by starting Society of the Missionaries of St. Thomas to serve the underdeveloped tribal region of Attappady in Palakkad district in Kerala.

St. Thomas Bhilai Mission - The roots of Village Mission

Christ had great plans for Malankara Orthodox Church. The church didnot curtial its missionary reach to just the state of Kerala, but the missionary reach of the church expanded to places beyond the boundaries of its home state of Kerala.

Mahatma Gandhiji once said - 'The soul of India is in its Villages'. In the early 1970's, many of these villages in North India were extremely backward in education, healthcare and womens welfare. H.G. Stephanos Mar Theodosius, the metropolitan of Calcutta and the pioneer of the mission work in North India took on this daunting mission for the Malankara Orthodox Church by laying the foundation stones of its village mission.

St. Pauls Mission and the Mission board

For any true organized and sustainable mission, it is very important to train the missionaries and provide guidance and resources. In such a persuit, the church established the Mission board which has taken the initiative of training the missionaries and providing them the resources needed for their mission.

Sabharatnam H.G. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Osthathios thirumeni, and the visionary of the malankara mission saw the need for training the missionaries in the early days and established the St. Pauls Mission center at Mavelikara in 1953 on his return from US after his education. The land was purchased by  and using his savings that he had in the US.

Servants of Cross

In the early 19th century, caste segregation and Untouchability plagued the society. This era saw the rise of Mahatma Gandhi and other social leaders who focussed on the reform movements. At the same time, in the land of Malankara, Deacon Peter  began his deicated service for equal rights for the so called lower castes in the Hindu society. With his simple life style and care and love for the neglected and his mission to preach the class less Gospel of Christ, Fr. Peter was very influential and attracted many to the Orthodox faith.

In 1924, H.G. established the 'Servants of Cross', (Sleebadasa Samooham) a monastic missionary movement to care for the upliftment and welfare of the people attracted to the Orthodox faith.

Got Anger?

Got Anger? How well do you manage it? Anger is a normal, healthy emotion, but when chronic, explosive anger spirals out of control, it can have serious consequences for your relationships, your health, and your state of mind. Rev. Fr. Thomas Kalam talks about Anger Management at St. Gregorios Orthodox Church as part of personal development series.
