The 10th Anniversary Reachout Projects

For the last 10 years, heavenly father has blessed us abundantly with his heavenly blessings. As we enjoy these blessings, we realize that there is a world of people who have not been as fortunate as we are. As part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, one of our plans is to reach out to the less fortunate people through different projects. Our goal is to use these projects to reach out to the people in the most backward areas of our state. The five projects are:

PEEK Project
1. PEEK (Primary Education Essential Kits for financially poor students)
We live in a world where there are many children who do not get the chance to realize the dream of attending a school because their parents cannot afford the cost of even primary education. To help these kids, PEEK project provides essential kits for primary school children.
PEEK project not only provides the resources needed to attend school, it also funds the cost to provide tution to students. The project is done for the primary school students of Idukki diocese through the help of GRACE Charities, an charitable organization of the Idukki Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church.

The aim of the project is to encourage financially poor families to send their children to school. GRACE operates two balavadi's which consists of 57 children from very poor families. Two teachers are employed to provide tution to the children.
This project was started by GRACE under the leadership of the late H.G. Augen Mar Dionysius, Metropolitan of Idukki diocese.

HEAP Project
2. HEAP (Higher Education Affordable for the Poor)
The cost of higher education has skyrocketed in the past many years and has reached a point where the financially poor families are unable to afford it. The HEAP project provides education assistance to students who would like to pursue their higher education.
A student in a backward place secured 80% marks in her exams. Unfortunately, she is unable to continue her because her parents are so poor that they are unable to pay the fees.

The aim of the HEAP project is to provide financial educational assistance for pursuing higher education to such students from financially poor families in financially backward areas of Kerala. This year, 22 students have been selected as part of this project. Out of them, 18 students are from Idukki diocese and 4 are from Thrissur diocese. The project works in cooperation with the ICON Charities REAP Project for the selecting students from Idukki diocese. The project works in coordination with the Anveshi project to support the students of Thrissur diocese.

KNOT Project
4. KNOT (A helping hand to overcome the financial burdens of marriage for the poor)
While the extravaganza of marriages of rich families increases every day, there are many young girls who are unable to get married because they cannot afford the cost of even the simplest marriages. KNOT project will provide marriage cost assistance to a girl from a financially poor family.
Many families worry as their financial difficulties prevent their daughters from getting married. In order to help such girls, we provide marriage assistance to such families to conduct the marriages and start a better family life.

The project is done through the help of GRACE Charities, an charitable organization of the Idukki Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church.
The KNOT project help was distributed on Oct 23 at Idukki Aramana Chapel in an event organized by Grace Charities.

ROOF Project
3. ROOF (A shelter for the homeless)
It's hard to imagine plastic cement bags as the outdoor walls of a house, trash metal from tins as your roof and old sarees and cardboard boxes as your room separators, but these are the unfortunate reality in some parts of our state. The ROOF project will build a low budget shelter for one such family.
Imagine a house that has collapsed in a rain and has been repaired by using few sticks as the support for the roof so that a family can live under it for one more season till the next rain. Surely, the house will not survive one more monsoon.
The aim of the project is to build a shelter for such a family in a financially poor backward area of Kerala. As part of this project, a house is being built in Cumbemettu, Idukki.

The house is being build under the supervision of GRACE Charities, an charitable organization of the Idukki Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church. The volunteers provides non skilled labor to reduce the total cost of construction.

Good Friday Charity
Good Friday and the great lent is a time for prayers, fasting, repentance and reconciliation with God. It's a time to be thankful for all the blessings the Lord has showered on us. Along with fasting and prayer, there should also be acts of love and compassion. We must give the poor what we have saved through fasting. God's grace spreads more in us when we share our fortunes with the less fortunate.

In line with this, every year, we use the Good friday offertory to provide help to financially poor people with medical emergencies. Their stories touch us and makes us feel how blessed we are and makes us reach out.

CDs for Charity Project

CDs for Charity is an initiative launched by the Sunday school and the Gregorian Media of St. Gregorios Orthodox Church Austin, TX. The initiative aims at

1. Creating awareness among people about charitable initiatives in India

2. Motivating people to feed orphanages and support charitable projects in India

In addition to the two published aims of  'CDs for Charity' project, there is a third hidden aim: to regain the lost confidence of people in charity that has resulted due to lack of follow up and lack of accounting transparency. We hope to achieve this by proper awareness campaigns and prompt follow up.

How does 'CDs for Charity' work?

  1. The Gregorian Media Labs (the media group of St. Gregorios Orthodox Church Austin, TX) creates CD/DVDs of various church programs and these CD/DVDs are given to people as a gift for donating to charity.
  2. CD/DVDs are created by video recording various church activities
  3. An orphanage/charitable initiatives are focused in each CD/DVD series. Information about the charity is included to create awareness.
  4. For each person feeding an orphanage or supporting a charity project, a CD/DVD is given as a gift.
Feed 1 lakh a year project

'Feed 1 lakh a year' project is an initiative launched by the Malabar diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church under the leadership of H.G. Zachariah Mar Theophilos thirumeni to feed 1 lakh (100,000) poor people during 2006 in the financially backward areas of Malabar.

According to H.G Theophilos thirumeni "The program encourages parents to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays. When they fast, it is their duty to feed the hungry. Charity, in the form of feeding, is the fruit of prayer and fasting. We are men of prayer and fasting. If we do not produce these fruits, we are fruitless trees."

The 'Feed 1 lakh a year' project plans to provide food for at least 100 people for 365 days at the Calicut Guidance centre. The project will be extended to 4 other centers in Kannur, Palakkad, Malapuram, and Kasargode districts to feed the hungry on Wednesdays and Fridays of every week. All together, the plan is to feed 1 lakh people by the end of the year. In addition to these, individuals can feed one or two people weekly by their fasting.

According to H.G Theophilos thirumeni "Let our fast be a blessing to our neighbor by feeding them".

For a minimum of INR 500 ($12) 100 hungry souls can be fed with Kanji or for INR 650, lunch can be served for 100 hungry souls.
